Keep it in Perspective

Perception: The recognition and interpretation of sensory stimuli based chiefly on memory. “We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” – Anais Nin. However, when faced with a barrage of challenges, there’s a natural and powerful force that can suck you into themes and memories of the masses (fear, pessimism, misery) instead of your own. Be aware and think it through. Also, it might be time to create some new memories.

When you expand your thoughts and experiences, your perceptions will follow. A delightful illustration: Mark Twain, when 14, wrote that he thought his father was so ignorant that he could hardly stand to have him around. He added “When I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much he had learned in 7 years.” Pause to process . . . now, fast forward 7 years. Does today look different?

It’s also effective to gain perspective by stepping outside and looking in. Here is an exercise designed to open the eyes of those sporting rose colored glasses as well as those donning double eye patches. All the world’s a stage! Pretend for a paragraph that you are watching a play of your life. Is it a comedy, drama, tragedy? How long has this play been running? Is it successful? How many acts and scenes are there? Are the original actors still performing? Are they any good? What is the setting? What is your role?

1. Stage LEFT! You havfe bowed out and rejoined the audience to watch and critique.
2. Behind the Scenes: You work hard, receive recognition . . . or feel burned out, bored, and unappreciated.
3. Supporting Role: You are satisfied but keep your eyes open for your big break.
4. Lead Actor: You are the center of attention and not really concerned with much else. Reviews are good and you’re rockin’!
5. Director/Producer: You are in charge, calling the shot, and coordinating all the pieces and players.

Do you stick to one role or combine a few? You may be pleased with your performance and settle in for another season. You may dust off that huge hook, yank some folks off stage and send them to the Soaps. You might have no desire to partake in this play any longer.

The curtain closes. In any event, whether you pretend or act, you enrich and enliven your experiences. Then, when faced with opportunities to “keep it in perspective”, you will have that many more costumes, themes, sets, and lines to chose from. “Whether you think you are (optimistic, happy, fulfilled) or that you are not, you are usually right.” Act 1, Scene 1 . . . the curtain rises.

Time’s a Tickin’: “1st rule of holes. When you’re in one, quit digging.” Ever waste time complaining, commiserating, and repeating scenes gone awry ad nauseum?

1. Deal with conflicts ASAP. Write (even if you don’t send), call, email then let it go. It will release the tension. Often it is you who suffers while the other sits clueless.
2. Focus on your message and be satisfied with your effort regardless of the reply.
3. Establish a plan for behaving and responding in the future and give yourself a break.

Impotence treatments are effective but not your only hope

Experts are now arguing that the fact you suffer with erectile dysfunction does not ergo that Viagra Sildenafil Citrate, Cialis tadalafil or Levitra Vardenafil is the answer. Although the larger majority of cases can be treated with these three treatments, many sufferers fail to recognise that the condition can often occur as the result of other factors aside from blood flow and penile damage.

Low testosterone levels are also big causes of impotence, as are psychological problems and stress. Testosterone is an integral part of the erectile process and it is responsible for the production of nitric oxide. This is needed for the blood vessels to expand. Your health care provider will tell you that it is a good idea to get your testosterone levels checked in order to rule this out as a cause.

There are a number of misconceptions concerning erectile dysfunction, including the fact that it isn’t a common condition. Despite what we see on the big screen and the media, we aren’t all pumped up and ready for action and a large proportion of us will suffer with some form of erectile dysfunction at some stage in our lives. Simply stressing out about one particular sexual encounter can lead to a loss of an erection as can being presented with sexually confident women.

The truth of the matter is, although the treatments out there are highly effective and clinically proven, it is perhaps best to discuss the issue with a trained expert before beginning one.

Options to Cure Obesity

Obesity means accumulation of excess fat on the body. Foods provide us with the nutrients we need for healthy bodies and calories for energy. But if you overeat regularly, you gain weight and if you continue to gain weight, you may become obese. Poor diet cause obesity. Beyond a person’s heredity, poor dietary habits can contribute to heart disease and diabetes.

Again, obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) more than 30. The BMI is a measure of your weight relative to your height. It can also be calculated for weight in pounds and height in inches.

For most people who are obese, the safest and most effective way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more.

Below are various options to cure obesity.

Controlling diet

Reducing calories moderately is essential to achieve a slow but steady weight loss. Strategies of dietary therapy includes knowing about the calorie content in different foods, food composition, understanding nutritional value and how to prepare food and what to buy etc.

Physical activity

Moderate physical activity on daily basis is recommended for weight loss. Abdominal fat and waist circumference can be mostly reduced through physical activity. Strategies of physical activity should include the use of aerobic exercises like- cycling, dancing, swimming etc.
Diet and exercise are always a better alternative to weight loss surgery, but if these don’t work, you may need some extra help.

Behavior therapy

This includes changing diet and physical activity patterns and habits to new behaviors that promote weight loss. This includes joining a support group that can encourage weight loss in a positive way, developing a social support network, setting achievable goals about weight loss and working for it, maintaining a record of daily exercise and diet. A combination of a lower calorie diet and increased physical activity is reported to produce more weight loss than diet or exercise only. This is more about mental activity-changing your attitude towards food and exercise.

Medical treatment

If you are unsuccessful at losing weight on your own, you can seek doctor’s help. Various drugs are also used for weight loss and weight maintenance. For this, patients should be continuously assessed to determine the effects and safety of the drug. A combination of drugs, diet and exercise could prove to be an effective treatment for obesity.

Surgery
Obesity surgery is recommended as a treatment option for persons with obesity that have-a BMI of more than 40. Obesity surgery is used either to modify the stomach or the intestines to reduce the amount of food that can be eaten. This is for long-term weight loss control with severe obesity. Patients should know the benefits and risks associated with surgery before operation. For morbidly obese patients, who have significant obesity-related medical complications, surgery is the only option for them.

Mainly, there are two types of bariatric surgeries are done-gastric bypass surgery and lap band surgery. While they are helping people lose weight, to be more successful, it must be accompanied by healthy eating habits and regular exercise.

14 Functions of the Thyroid Gland

The thyroid, rather than being a separate “part” of the endocrine system is a major player of the whole endocrine system which regulates metabolism, growth, development and puberty, tissue function and moods. It does this by secreting thyroid hormones that regulate the speed in which body’s chemical functions proceed (metabolic rate).

Technically speaking, the thyroid gland regulates or in some way participates in the process of the following 14 body functions:

- regulates basal metabolic rate
- regulates body temperature
- regulates appetite
- promotes expulsion of glucose for energy
- stimulates protein synthesis
- increases lipolysis
- regulates cholesterol levels
- maintains standards for cardiac function
- promotes normal neuronal development in
the fetus and infants
- promotes normal neuronal function in
adults
- enhances effects of sympathetic nervous
system
- promotes body and skeletal growth
- promotes development of muscles and
muscle function
- regulates standards for female
reproduction and lactation

For as small as the thyroid is in physical size, it does quite a bit for our bodies. So just how does it do all this?

The thyroid gland is located in the front of your neck just below the Adams Apple. It is wrapped around the trachea (windpipe) and has a shape similar to that of a bow tie or butterfly. Its only purpose is to produce hormones which are introduced through the blood effecting metabolism throughout our entire body. The thyroid gland produces its two most important thyroid hormones, thyroxin (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), from iodine which it gets from a diet of seafood and salt. Although the thyroid produces more T4 than T3 hormones (approximately 10:1 ratio) the T3 hormone is the more biologically potent of the two. Once introduced into the blood from the thyroid gland, a large portion of the T4 hormone is then converted into T3 hormone. The T3 hormone is the actual hormone affecting the body’s metabolism.

The thyroid gland works in conjunction with two other glands, the hypothalamus gland (the area of the brain that controls body temperature, hunger and thirst) and the pituitary gland, located at the base of the brain, which acts as a regulator to the output of the thyroid glad. Hormones produced from each gland signals the next gland to produce its hormone. So the hypothalamus gland produces a hormone called TRH which sends a signal to the pituitary gland to produce a hormone called TSH which in turn signals the thyroid to produce T4 and T3 hormones. In addition to the signal from the TRH hormone from the hypothalamus gland, the pituitary gland senses the levels of T4 and T3 hormones in the blood and signals the thyroid gland by the amount of TSH hormone it releases to either increase or decrease the production of T4 and T3 hormones.

Because of the wide influence the thyroid has to the rest of the body, it is essential that the thyroid be kept in good health at all times. A dysfunctional thyroid can escalate, causing further dysfunction and damage to other organs of the body, and in some cases, if left unattended, a dysfunctional thyroid can become fatal with a heart attach.
